00:00You know, a lot of people think video games are one of the reasons that American children are overweight.
00:04Well, one Philadelphia man says that they can actually help you lose weight, and he wants to prove you can give more than just your fingers a workout.
00:13NBC Ten's Tim Furlong is live now at Fitness Works gym in South Philadelphia with more. This is an interesting story, Tim.
00:19It sure is, Renee. You know, in my family room I have an XBox and I have a treadmill, and I'll tell you, they don't get along real well.
00:24But this guy is bringing the two together. He is bringing fitness and playing video games all at the same time.
00:34-Aerobics class, a normal way to get in shape. Video games? -Nice shot! -Not so much.
00:41Most game systems might help your thumbs get stronger, but thats about it.
00:45But now check out the Wii Workout.
00:47The boxing game definitely generates the most sweat and calorie burn.
00:52Mickey DeLorenzo has been a Nintendo freak since age five. Game Boy, Super Nintendo, Nintendo Sixty Four (64), Game Cube.
00:59But the new Nintendo Wii is the first system that has gotten him up off the couch and his weight down.
01:04You probably know the deal: the Wii is physically interactive with motion sensitive controllers.
01:08Mickey and his girlfriend had no idea how interactive it really is.
01:11After the first ten minutes or so, we look over at each other and were panting, were sweating.
01:16So Mickey decided to do an experiment. A little "Wii-search", if you will.
01:20-He took some "before" pictures of himself and then fired up the boxing game that came with the console. -Round one.
01:25I would get into the game. I would dodge. You know, I would punch.
01:29You know. And between rounds, if the person got knocked down, Id, you know, hop on my toes and get ready.
01:34Yeah, Mickey got into it. Dancing like a butterfly, stinging like a bee. The whole deal.
01:39It wasn't just boxing, either. He worked in a little bowling, and some tennis, too, slicing a drop shot in Andre Agassi-style all over his virtual video opponents.
01:48Mickey played the Wii hard, thirty minutes a day for six straight weeks, constantly charting his progress, checking his body fat, and measuring his waistline.
01:55For the purpose of the experiment, he didn't change his eating habits. So, how did he do?
02:00Nine pounds total. Two percent body fat loss.
02:02And he dropped two pant sizes. Not too shabby for a video game workout program.
02:07What do the trainers at Fitness Works think of his routine?
02:10If you're not the type of person that's going to motivate yourself to get in the gym, and you could find motivation in playing Nintendo Wii, good for you.
02:15Obviously, he could have gotten a more total workout here at the gym, working in a little iron. But Mickey admits he just doesnt get there enough.
02:21He does make time for gaming, though. His girlfriend calls his plan a home run.
02:26It's awesome. Having fun, working out. Its great. For girls too.
02:30Great for anyone who wants a "Wii" bit of exercise.
02:33I think people are actually buying as a fitness system, which essentially its not.
02:38And Mickey wants to be a Nintendo spokesperson, sort of like Jared the sandwich guy,
02:42and he does hear some rumors that Nintendo is working on some fitness games.
02:46If you want to know more about the Wii Workout, you can go check it out at our web site. Its NBC10.com.
02:50Live at Fitness Works in South Philly, Im Tim Furlong, NBC Ten News.
02:54All right, Tim. "Wii" liked it!
